The SmartPi 3.0 expansion module adds voltage measurement and contactless current measurement interfaces to the Raspberry Pi, transforming it into a fully-fledged smart meter that monitors and records electricity consumption and generation, and makes this data available via a network or the internet. 

With the SmartPi 3.0, you can easily record and analyse electricity consumption data and use it as a basis for energy-saving measures. With the SmartPi, you can reduce your energy costs both at work and at home.

Current measurement is carried out non-contact via current clamps, enabling currents of up to 100A to be measured in the standard version. Simply repositioning the jumpers allows any cable-type current transformer with a secondary current of 1A to be connected. This enables currents of up to 700A and above to be measured.

The measurement data is read every second and stored in an InfluxDB database every minute. It is also possible to store the data in an external Prometheus database.

The SmartPi’s built-in web server makes the measurement data available in a graphical format, which can be easily accessed via a browser or a tablet/smartphone.


The SmartPi features MQTT and REST interfaces for integration with other energy management systems.

Thanks to the built-in EMETER protocol, the SmartPi can, in many cases, also replace an SMA Energy Meter.

A Modbus interface (TCP) completes the package.
In addition, CSV files containing energy measurement data can be saved to other servers via FTP.

 Custom Node-RED modules allow you to read the current measurement values and integrate them into flows. For example, you can set up the system to send you an email if performance thresholds are exceeded or not met.

Open-source smart meter for the Raspberry Pi

The SmartPi software is written in Go, is open source, and can be found on GitHub (https://github.com/nDenerserve/SmartPi).
It’s ideal for using the SmartPi in your own projects or for extending its functionality.

All interfaces to the Raspberry Pi are electrically isolated, ensuring maximum safety.

 

The SmartPi 3.0 features an RTC (Real-Time Clock) to ensure reliable operation even without a network connection. The entire system is powered by the integrated power supply unit using the measured voltage. This eliminates the need for fiddly connections using power adapters on micro-USB sockets.

The case has a mounting bracket on the back for securing the SmartPi 3.0 to a DIN rail. The module is compatible with all Raspberry Pi models from version B+ 1.2 onwards and can be purchased as a standalone module, a kit or a fully assembled unit.
